Singer Michael Jackson dies at 50

Pop star Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, aged 50.

Paramedics were called to the singer's home around midday local time on Thursday after he stopped breathing.

He was pronounced dead two hours later at the UCLA medical centre. A spokesman for the centre said the star died of a suspected heart attack.

Speaking on behalf of Jackson's family, his brother, Jermaine, said doctors had tried to resuscitate the star for more than an hour without success.

He added: "The family request that the media please respect our privacy during this tough time."

"And Allah be with you Michael always. I love you."

Jackson, who had a history of health problems, had been due to begin a series of comeback concerts in the UK on 13 July.

Concerns were raised last month when four of the concerts were postponed, but organisers insisted the dates had been moved due to the complexity of staging the show.

A spokeswoman for The Outside Organisation, which was organising the publicity for the shows, said she had no comment at this time.

Broadcaster Paul Gambaccini said: "I always doubted that he would have been able to go through that schedule, those concerts. It seemed to be too much of a demand on the unhealthy body of a 50 year old.

"I'm wondering that, as we find out details of his death, if perhaps the stress of preparing for those dates was a factor in his collapse.

"It was wishful thinking that at this stage of his life he could be MJ again."

Uri Gellar, a close friend of the star, told BBC News it was "very, very sad".

Speaking outside the UCLA medical centre in Los Angeles, civil rights activist Rev Al Sharpton paid tribute to his friend.

"I knew him 35 years. When he had problems he would call me," he said.

"I feel like he was not treated fairly. I hope history will be more kind to him than some of the contemporary media."

Melanie Bromley, west coast bureau chief of Us Weekly magazine, told the BBC the scene in Los Angeles was one of "pandemonium".

"At the moment there is a period of disbelief. There are hundreds of people outside UCLA waiting for news.

"He was buying a home in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles and the scene outside the house is one of fans, reporters and TV cameras - it's absolute craziness.

"I feel this is the biggest celebrity story in a long time and has the potential to be the Princess Diana of popular culture."

Paramedics were called to the singer's house in Bel Air at 1221 following an emergency phone call.

They performed CPR on Jackson and rushed him to the UCLA medical centre.

A spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said the robbery and homicide team was investigating Jackson's death because of its "high profile", but there was no suggestion of foul play.

Jackson began his career as a child in family group The Jackson 5.

He then went on to achieve global fame as a solo artist with smash hits such as Billie Jean and Bad.

Thriller, released in 1982, is the biggest-selling album of all time, shifting 65m copies, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

He scored seven UK number ones as a solo artist and won a total of 13 Grammy awards.

"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones, who produced Thriller, Bad and Off The Wall.

"He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."

The singer had been dogged by controversy and money trouble in recent years, becoming a virtual recluse.

He was arrested in 2003 on charges of molesting a 14-year-old boy, but was found not guilty following a five-month trial.

The star had three children, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II.

He is survived by his mother, Katherine, father, Joseph and eight siblings - including Janet, Randy, Jermaine and La Toya Jackson.

Farrah Fawcett, 'Charlie's Angels' actress, dies

Farrah Fawcett, the blond-maned actress whose best-selling poster and "Charlie's Angels" stardom made her one of the most famous faces in the world, has died. She was 62. Fawcett had been battling anal cancer on and off for three years. Ryan O'Neal, Fawcett's romantic partner since the mid-1980s, recently told People magazine that the sex symbol was fading.

'New' FEAR FACTORY Lineup Cancels Debut Gig; Entire German Tour Called Off

According to Sergi Ramos of The Metal Circus, the much-anticipated debut performance by the new band calling itself FEAR FACTORY — featuring original FF members Dino Cazares (guitar) and Burton C. Bell (vocals) alongside bassist Byron Stroud (who played on the last two FEAR FACTORY albums in addition to touring and recording with STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and ZIMMERS HOLE) and legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (DETHKLOK, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DEATH, TESTAMENT) — which was scheduled to take place earlier tonight (Sunday, June 21) at the Metalway Festival in Zaragoza, Spain was cancelled at the last minute, reportedly due to legal issues surrounding the use of the FEAR FACTORY name.

UPDATE: According to concert promoter Marek Lieberberg Konzertagentur GmbH & Co.KG, FEAR FACTORY's entire German tour — which was supposed to take place between August 3 and August 12 — has been called off. The other European dates appear to be in jeopardy as well.

In a June 14, 2009 appearance on the nationally syndicated radio program "Speed Freaks", FEAR FACTORY drummer Raymond Herrera stated about the band's current status, "[Guitarist Christian Olde Wolbers and I] actually still in FEAR FACTORY. There's a big legal battle going on right now. Essentially, what's happened is Dino and Burt have become friends again and they decided to start a new band, and furthermore, they decided to call it FEAR FACTORY. They never communicated with us about it, and they're acting like there was never any contract, but there's four members that are Fear Factory Incorporated — which is the four of us — so it's almost like them two against us two, so it's kind of a stalemate. Moving forward, I don't know what's gonna happen with the trademark, so to speak. It's kind of a weird situation, but it's not a situation that we created that was weird."

Regarding why Christian and Raymond aren't involved with the new FEAR FACTORY lineup, Bell told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine, "It's like a business and I'm just reorganizing. After time, you realize what's important and what's not important, and after talking to Dino again, it just felt good and it felt right."

When asked if he knew straight away that he wouldn't include Christian and Raymond in the new FEAR FACTORY lineup, Burton said, "It's part of the organization. We learned some things and we have a really good rapport with Byron, and Gene is an amazing drummer. Dino and I, as the founders of FEAR FACTORY, we thought, 'Hey, let's try this, a different flavor.' Because wherever me and Dino go, it'll still be FEAR FACTORY, I believe."

Dino added, "I've had many projects in the past and I've played with some of the best drummers in this form of music, from Roy Mayorga to Nick Barker, Tim Yeung, Joey Jordison, and now I'm playing with the king of this genre. How could I pass that up? How could anyone pass up a chance to play with Gene Hoglan?"

Dino's tenure with FEAR FACTORY ended in March 2002 after Bell announced his departure from the group, allegedly telling his bandmates at the time, "Look, guys, I'm not into it anymore, I don't wanna play in the band anymore, I don't wanna play with you guys, and I especially don't wanna play with you, Dino."

FEAR FACTORY eventually reformed without Dino and released two more studio albums, 2004's "Archetype" and 2005's "Transgression".

In a September 2007 interview with MTV.com, Cazares — who currently heads up a new band called DIVINE HERESY — stated about his former group, "In the long run, I believe I came out the winner, and I feel that they have bastardized the name, and it's a completely different band, different style. I definitely carried the passion in that band, and my riffs, my style, they were very distinctive. I don't regret anything I created in FEAR FACTORY whatsoever. It will be part of my memory for the rest of my life. I believe I am continuing the legacy and keeping this metal torch alive and bringing it back with DIVINE HERESY. You can feel the hunger and passion in DIVINE HERESY, which I believe FEAR FACTORY has been missing, and is still missing to this day."

ARKAEA — the new band featuring Wolbers and Herrera alongside vocalist Jon Howard (THREAT SIGNAL) and bassist Pat Kavanaugh (THREAT SIGNAL) — will release its debut album, "Years In The Darkness", on July 13 via E1 Music (formerly Koch Records).

BRET MICHAELS Says Prop 'Should Have Been Stopped' Until He Cleared The Stage

POISON singer Bret Michaels has released the following statement regarding the incident at Sunday's (June 7) Tony Awards when he got clocked in the head by a descending set piece during his band's performance.

"I am trying to remain very positive and somewhat humorous about the whole situation.

"I apologize that I did not make a statement earlier as I have been feeling pretty beat up over the last few days. The fact is I was honored to be asked to perform at the event. The entire 'Rock of Ages' production [with whom POISON performed] were awesome, and even though I was completely out of my element, I was really enjoying myself prior to my injury. In fact, all involved at the awards show treated me good.

"I had a great time at the Tonys right up until I got blindsided. I must admit it was a little blurry after that. In hindsight, there is no doubt I got my bell rung. Unfortunately, it has been posted and perhaps funny to watch, but I can assure you it has been painful to experience.

"In all honesty, I had absolutely no idea what struck my head. Upon impact, I thought a piece of the lighting rig had fallen out of the ceiling and as I fell back it seemed like my head struck the stage and I blacked out for a second. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a large set prop coming down straight for me. I immediately pushed myself out of the way, and amidst the chaos, I laid on the floor and asked, 'What the hell just happened?' My nose, mouth and the back of my head felt numb. I vaguely remember asking Big John [head of Bret's security], 'Do I have any teeth left in my mouth?' I knew I could move my arms and legs and that was an instant relief. Somebody handed me a towel to wipe the blood from my face, and in my dazed state, I recall staring at what seemed to be Shrek, a talking goat head and several monkey like creatures.

"Over the last few days, a lot of speculation as to what happened and who is to blame have surfaced. I need to make clear at no point since the incident occurred do I feel like the accident was malicious in any way and I feel this will all work itself out. However, I must state I found it a little strange that the only statement released by the Tony organization was that I missed my mark and that I was completely fine. First, I thought, 'What mark?' as there was no official mark, just a retracting drum riser and an overhead prop being rapidly lowered which was out of my view. Second, I think it was slightly irresponsible for them to report that I was fine without full knowledge of my condition when a doctor hadn't even looked at me yet and I surely don't remember any x-ray machines backstage.

"I am not looking for an apology; I only hoped that on a human level that the Tony organization's representative would have expressed some concern for injury in their statement or at the very least claim they would be looking into the matter. Whether it was a miscommunication, missed cue or missed mark, no matter what the situation was, the prop should have been stopped, or at least slowed for a few more seconds, until I cleared the stage. I apparently had less than two seconds to avoid being hit. It was evident I was backing up and moving in the direction to exit the stage for at least 30 to 40 feet and it is plain to see I had no clue this prop was descending. For God's sake, they have at least a five second delay to prevent the airing of unapproved expletives and nudity!

"For the record, never at any point during my Sunday morning rehearsal was I ever instructed that the piece was coming down and that I had very little time to get off the stage; otherwise, believe me, I would have stopped or at least ducked so as not to be knocked out at the Tonys.

"Trust me, I never wanted any of this to happen. I was simply doing as I was told, which was to exit the stage as POISON's song 'Nothin' but a Good Time' came to a close.

"I feel for the actors and actresses who put in so much time and hard work on or off Broadway to get to the Tonys. This is their moment and I am sorry that some of it may have gotten overshadowed by my thick rocker cranium being struck by a stage prop.

"On a high note, I hear it was the highest-rated Tonys they have had in years. However, I was bummed that I did not get to see any of the acts perform during the Tonys as I have never seen a play on Broadway before. [I] probably would have enjoyed it, and [I was] even more bummed that I did not get to attend the after parties, 'cuz rumor has it Anne Hathaway was going to be there and she is hot.

"I would like to personally thank Bobby and C.C., Mark Hogue, Larry Morand and my crew, along with Liza Minnelli, Mark Indelicato and Carole Propp, for rushing to my dressing room to check on my condition.

"In closing, I truly appreciate everyone's concern. I thank the good Lord I have a thick skull and I have a feeling this may have been my first and final curtain call at the Tonys."

Photos of Bret Michaels' nose fracture and busted lip can be viewed below. The POISON singer and reality TV star's publicist Joann Mignano said that Michaels received three stitches in his lip and had a CAT scan on Monday (June 8) as a precautionary measure. "His neck was hurt in an accident years ago, so he's being cautious," she told People magazine. "He said he wanted to make sure this was all looked at and taken care of, and I said it was the right thing to do."

Michaels, who is currently on a solo tour, postponed his show scheduled for last night in Myrtle Beach to Thursday, August 6. Bret Michaels solo tour dates will resume June 12 in Gadsden Alabama and will continue throughout the summer.

Composers Seek Change In Copyright Law

Reuters

Nathan Barr has scored horror films such as "Hostel" and the HBO vampire series "True Blood," but what really keeps the composer up at night is fear he will not get paid for music distributed online.

"'True Blood' is my first big show for TV, and it's definitely going to see a lot of play on the Internet. It's a big issue for me," Barr told Reuters. "I don't understand why composers don't get paid if someone downloads it."

The issue is the latest digital copyright debate pitting creators in the entertainment industry on one side and studios, broadcasters, cable operators and technology companies on the other. Barr underscores how a growing number of artists - writers, actors and, yes, composers - feel they are not fairly compensated for content distributed on the Internet.

Actors and writers have aired their grievances and demanded Hollywood studios pay up. Now, composers, along with publishers, are urging Congress to change copyright law so that when music airs in an audio-visual download, it is considered a public performance that earns them royalties.

The stakes are high: Industry experts believe composers could potentially earn nearly $100 million in additional royalty payments annually as Internet viewing grows - if the law was changed to deem downloads of music in audio-visual works as public performances.

"We see audio visual as a vigorous growth area for composers, whether it's on Hulu, Netflix or iTunes, and a big issue is clarifying public performance rights as they apply to digital downloads," said Richard Conlon of Broadcast Music Inc., a performing rights group that collects royalties on behalf of artists.

The copyright issue, apart from being proposed legislation, is also expected to be the subject of a House Judiciary committee hearing in July, industry experts say.

At the center of the debate is a federal court ruling in April 2007, considered a victory for companies like AOL, RealNetworks and Yahoo that found that downloading a music file was not considered a "performance."

Composers are arguably one of most overlooked among the so-called frontline entertainers behind a movie or TV series.

"Most composers don't get pensions like other people... and we're now realizing we're not covered for much of the way entertainment is viewed online," Barr said.

Performing rights group American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers is appealing the 2007 ruling.

And ASCAP, BMI and various other publishing and songwriting groups sent a letter in March 2009 to Congress urging a change in the U.S. Copyright Law.

"It's important these markets get locked down as composers really rely on public performance royalties," Conlon said.

Meanwhile, the MPAA strongly opposes these efforts, arguing that a download is not a performance.

"The MPAA is opposed to amending the copyright law to require a double payment for music in movies and TV shows downloaded from the Internet," Angela Martinez, a spokeswoman for the MPAA said. "We do not need to amend the Copyright Act to compensate these composers twice for the same activity."

Veteran entertainment lawyer Jay Cooper said composers collect performance royalties when their music airs on cable, TV, radio and is streamed over the Web.

"But if a film along with the music in it is incorporated in a DVD, the typical contract between a composer and studio does not grant the composer a royalty or payment for sales of the DVD or for any downloads of the DVD," Cooper said.

"Composers believe the performance right of a download is not a contractual right but a legal right to which there is great opposition," he said.

Martinez and others like Jonathan Potter, executive director of the Digital Media Association, which represents online services like Apple's iTunes and Yahoo, believe composers are being disingenuous.

"This legislative request is the latest effort by these groups to blur the lines between making a copy and making a public performance in order to get royalties where none are obligated or should be obligated," Potter said.

DRAGONFORCE's ressue of the band's debut LP, "Valley Of The Damned", came out last month via Spinefarm Records. This wonderfully explosive nine-tracker proved that the band's signature style (expansive material, soaring vocals, guitar pyrotechnics) was very much in place from day one, with songs such as "Black Fire", "Disciples Of Babylon" and the title track itself showing a band both ambitious and accomplished beyond its years.

In order to make this 2009 reissue something special, all of the material has been both remixed and remastered (by guitarist Herman Li and regular producer Karl Groom), a bonus DVD has been added and the artwork generally brought up to date. The DVD is especially interesting as it contains a number of different elements, including a live version of "Valley Of The Damned" filmed/recorded in Osaka, Japan, on the band's first-ever visit to that country. Add to this a selection of footage captured and commented on by the guys themselves, and you have an overall package that provides both the musical goods plus an insight into what goes on behind the scenes — which, in the world of DRAGONFORCE, seems to consist of near-constant insults and banter, healthy amounts of "drinking" plus the inappropriate consumption of corned beef!

Kataklysm Guitarist Detained at US Border by Federal Agents

Canada’s KATAKLYSM recently returned home after two separate very successful shows in St-Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. Unfortunately upon arriving in America guitarist J-F Dagenais was pulled from line at customs and detained by Federal Agents.

Vocalist Maurizio Iacono commented on the band’s experience in Russia and J-F’s not so friendly welcome home:

“Well, this was one odd week especially yesterday. First we finally flew out to Russia for the first time and we didn’t know what to expect. There’s always been this grim picture painted of that country to us. Having said that we thought we’d arrive under dark skies, with rain and depressed looking people everywhere. Instead, we arrived to sunshine and enthusiastic people that looked happy and energetic and we were through customs in matter of minutes. So I said to myself, ‘this will be interesting.’ We were soon greeted there with open arms by the promoters and we were off. We played St-Petersburg first then Moscow. The shows were fantastic and everything was top notch. Fans knew all the lyrics and went ballistic! We even had Russian special forces soldiers stage diving! It was just a crazy all around good time and the shows were packed! I could have stayed there another week but we said our goodbyes and headed back home. ”

“We arrived in Washington D.C. with a lay over to Chicago where I live now (the rest of the band still live in Montreal). So we grabbed our bags and went through immigration with no problems as expected. As we’re waiting in line for the customs exit some uniformed guy grabs J-F and takes him away with his bags. We assumed it was just a random check.”

“So we make our way to our next gate for our plane and realize it’s been over an hour and there’s still no sign of J-F. This was 4pm. I go back to the customs area and the place is deserted. At this point we started worrying and asking questions but we received no answers. We decide to board our plane at 4:30 pm with still no sign of him. Someone from United Airlines tells me finally he won’t be joining our flight but still no reason is given. At this point I’m like ‘what the fuck is happening?’

“So we jet out of D.C. and get back to Chicago where the guys were staying over at my house until today to go back to Canada. After fruitless calls to the airport we just decided to wait for some sort of sign of life. That sign came at 11pm in Chicago at O’Hare airport. ”

“Apparently Washington customs official grabbed J-F and threw him in a room with only one chair and a table. He was there for five hours until they finally talked to him and they told him that he was wanted internationally and by the US government. I could have imagined his face when they told him this, it must have been priceless. People that know J-F know he couldn’t hurt an ant. He’s one of the most down to earth and sweetest people you could meet. After a few hours of denying everything, Interpol sent in a picture and that picture didn’t match his. What happened was that there was another Jean-Francois Dagenais that is listed in the FBI’s most wanted list and they thought they’d caught him. I mean, what the fuck!? He was given a tap on the shoulder and apology and rebooked to Chicago! Even though we were really worried all of us laughed it off at the end. It’s just ironic that we expected this to maybe happen in Russia but in the end it ended up happening right here at home!”

CATTLE DECAPITATION, CEPHALIC CARNAGE, WITHERED Drop Off 'Blackenedfest' Tour

CATTLE DECAPITATION, CEPHALIC CARNAGE and WITHERED have all reportedly pulled out of the remaining dates on the Blackenedfest tour. The headlining act, Norwegian black metallers MAYHEM, will apparently complete the trek on its own.

Swedish black metallers MARDUK, who were also supposed to take part in Blackenedfest, were forced to cancel their participation in the trek after singer Mortuus' visa was not processed in time for the tour.

MAYHEM recently announced the addition of French guitarist Silmaeth (ex-VORKREIST) to the group's touring lineup.

MAYHEM's current live formation is as follows:

Attila Csihar: Vocals
Necrobutcher (a.k.a. Jørn Stubberud): Bass
Hellhammer (a.k.a. Jan Axel Blomberg): Drums
Morfeus (a.k.a. Krister Dreyer): Guitar
Silmaeth: Guitar

I had my only Almost Famous moment of this tour in Denver, Colorado. We were not exactly in a descending plane but it definitely felt like we were. I watched Blackened Fest collapse within a matter of several hours. It wasn't a short run of a tour but it's demise was very short notice to the people involved.

Just after Withered left the bus to start their set, Cartel (tour manager) came onto the Cephalic/Withered shared mobile home to announce, "Guys, tonight might be the last night of the tour." He started inquiring about who were the unnecessary people on the tour so he could free up bunk space. This included Sid, Leonard's (Cephalic vocalist) son, and Chuck, Nick's (Cephalic's bassist) brother. Because we were in Denver, Cephalic's home, the question at hand was easy to seal away: two free bunks. But, two free bunks doesn't solve the extra 6 people still on Marduk's money-swallowing bus. At that point in the night I knew one bus would be sent home and maybe some crew (most likely me too). But, I didn't expect the actual outcome: a Mayhem only tour.

Throughout the rest of the night, people's suspicions were high and many theories were developed. Cattle was ready to hit the road home since they have been out on the road for over two months now. Cephalic was willing to hop in their van since they were ten minutes from their practice space. Withered knew that renting a U-Haul would put them in the red, since that was their only option without a bus. But in the end, all the bands knew that the integrity of the tour would not work without all the support bands still on the bill

The Second Wave
Jonas, Mayhem's stage manager (and backstage "Mayhem Only" sign assigner), announced there would be a meeting at 1:30 am among all the bands. It was only about an hour later when Cattle's Travis bluntly asked what is going on. Cartel shot back, "I need to pay the… No buses are leaving unless the drivers get paid." Why the drivers didn't get paid more than half way into the tour wasn't uncovered and completely clear to me until after the damage was done. The 1:30 am meeting, which only included one member of each support band, Atilla and Necrobutcher, was a knotted bunch of assumptions and possible ways the rest of the tour could work out.

The Story Behind The Clusterfuck
When a band drops a tour, it instantly voids the contract made between the booker and the promoter for each venue. In other words, what ever money that each band was originally supposed to get at the end of each show was changed when Marduk didn't show up. Because Mayhem was the headliner, they believed that they deserved their full guaranteed money still. They didn't realize that Cartel had to renegotiate contracts with the promoter every night. With an extra bus to pay for and Mayhem still requesting the majority of the earned cash to match their original guarantee, the tour manager was left with no money to work with. The drivers didn't get paid and they weren't driving until they did. The support bands weren't making much money some nights, but were willing to hold out a couple days for cash. Unlike Mayhem, who wanted their full cash up front, every night.

The End Result
The sun rose and the arguing continued. Robin, Mayhem's bus driver, was prepared to ditch Mayhem and their crew at a truck stop in Denver without any of their gear or belongings. He, within a couple hours, had already changed the trailer lock. I was waiting for that moment, when the Cephalic/Withered bus drove off and Attila and Hellhammer still in their 4 inch soled boots were flipping birds at us because they were stuck in the middle of nowhere with no tour. Instead, Mayhem and Robin came to an agreement. Mayhem gave some money to the other two buses, paid off Robin and agreed to paying bus expenses one day in advance for the remaining 6 shows.

For the rest of the day, the booker, and bus company owner tried to work out deals to get at least one other band on the tour. Cattle declined. Cephalic declined. So when the only band left was Withered, they tried to bargain deals with them. But, the damage was done. Even though one of the bus drivers were willing to dramatically cut their pay, there is no way one band could afford fuel and bus maintenance without going into the red.

It was a brutal (not in a good way) end to the tour. For the most part, no one got to say goodbye to anyone. It was abrupt and unexpected (that's what she said). Most of all, it painted the final picture of the kind of people Mayhem are. Yes, being in a band means you are running a business. But even in business there are ethics and responsibility. Neglecting to pay your way from show to show and abandoning your tourmates is not good business. And its not the kind of metal I support.

For previous tour diaries, visit the Blackenedfest hub.

Note from Editor: Cephalic Carnage posted this update about dropping off the tour:

So, unfortunately, we were reluctantly forced to stay in Denver as the Blackenedfest Tour was unable to continue. We sincerely apologize to the friends and fans who've been waiting a while to see us and this tour. We want to thank Thunderdome for having us out, as we had an absolutely amazing time with Withered, Cattle Decapitation, all the crew and of course Mayham. We promise to make up the dates we didn't get to play…we ALMOST had the $70 dollar-a-shirt-cool-guy-tight-shirt company Affliction ready to pay for us to be helicoptered to the each of the rest of the tour dates, but they pulled the deal after they found out we stopped shaving our legs which was the part of the contract we decided we couldn't go through with, (except John). Anyways we've got some serious time off now, and we're going to commence with getting our long awaited reality-tv DVD completed, getting on with writing the next full length, and writing the 2nd installment of H.O.A., as well as finishing construction of our late night poutine stand, where we will serve country-fried giraffe eggs and your favorite French-Canadian specialty.

1,623 Canadian Guitarists Fail to Break Guinness World Record

I wouldn’t call it a letdown when a mere 1,623 people get together to try to break the world record for most people playing guitar at once, but the sticklers over at Guinness (who make the book, not the beer) would.

In 2007, a shocking 1,802 folks gathered to play Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany (which incidentally also hosts the German Playing Card Museum). This past weekend though, 179 less convened in Toronto to jam Neil Young’s “Helpless,” reports the Guardian [via the Daily Swarm].

But, as impressive as the numbers were, a Guinness judge who flew in to observe the proceedings in Toronto — as is his job — declared it not quite Guinness material.

The event was looking to be a hit, with over 3,000 people downloading the song’s tablature to learn it. But the number that showed up was significantly less.

And the organizers must have known it wasn’t quite what they were hoping for from the get-go: once the guitarists entered the fenced-in area, they weren’t allowed to leave. Helpless, indeed.

3 INCHES OF BLOOD Seeking Touring Bassist

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada's 3 INCHES OF BLOOD is looking for a bass player for live shows. A lot of touring will be involved in Canada, the U.S. and internationally.

All applicants must meet the following requirements.

1) You must be a Canadian citizen.
2) You must have no criminal record of any kind.
3) You must have a valid passport.

The group says: "Touring experience is definitely an asset. We are a career band, so leave your egos and childish fantasies at home. If you love playing heavy metal, have the skill, your own gear, and are 100% serious, then contact us through our MySpace page at or email us at threeinchesofblood@hotmail.com."

3 INCHES OF BLOOD has set "Here Waits Thy Doom" as the title of the band's new album, due on September 8 via Century Media Records. The CD was recorded at Seattle's London Bridge Studios with renowned producer Jack Endino (HIGH ON FIRE). The group took a break from the studio for a slew of high-profile shows with SLIPKNOT

Regarding 3 INCHES OF BLOOD's new deal with Century Media, vocalist Cam Pipes recently said, "Ever since our departure from our previous label [Roadrunner], Century Media has been in the forefront trying to get us to sign with them. No other label showed as much enthusiasm and belief in our band as they did. Right from the start we all got a great feeling from the whole Century Media team. We feel comfortable with the vision they have for us and are confident they have the necessary tools and motivation to help us in the ways our previous label didn't. We can't wait to unleash this new material upon the masses."

3 INCHES OF BLOOD's first album, "Battlecry Under a Wintersun" (2002), was released in the U.S. on February 3, 2009 and in Canada on February 24, 2009. It was made available by Sonic Unyon and distributed by Caroline Distribution in the U.S. As a special treat for all who waited to get it, there are four bonus tracks included on the album that were previously unavailable outside of the U.K.

I've spent the past 8 years making beautiful music with my best friends and sharing it with amazing people all over the world. I've had the honor and privilege of traveling with the most dedicated road dogs on the planet and sharing the stage with the greatest bands. I have been embraced by so many with such graciousness and hospitality and love. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make the dream a reality, especially Tom, James and Andrew. Announcing: Jim Rose Circus vs. Jake the Snake Roberts starts this July‏

Pretty Girls,Wrestling, Amazing Circus Stunts and a FIST FIGHT

Redemption. Wrestlers. This time it’s for real.

The Jim Rose Circus
vs.
Jake the Snake Roberts

Featuring SINn BohDi formerly Kizarney of WWE + special guests coming to a Club near you starting this July

Ladies and Gents it is time once again for the infamous and wildly celebrated, our favorite ringleader, Jim Rose to take his delightful and dark yet comedic, mysteriously twisted show on the road. Jim Rose presents The Jim Rose Circus vs Iconic Wrestling legend, Jake the
Snake Roberts. From out of the ring and into the clubs, this is the hottest mind bending thrill ride your money can buy this summer. A ticket is good for a seat, but you will only use the edge. High-flying, bone-jarring excitement--not since Christians were fed to the
lions has their been a show this funny. It feels like biblical times with miracles happening everywhere. You will need a swivel on your neck to catch it all. Done in a seedy atmosphere just like the movie The Wrestler.

SINn BohDi formerly Kizarney of WWE

Have you ever felt stunned laughter? Besides amazing circus stunts and pretty girls everywhere, this is the most brutal comedy ever offered. These are the real men who don't need a ring. Their
disputes will be settled live and raw on stage...using every dirty trick in the books. The intimacy of this epic battle will make you feel like you're living it.

Bebe The Circus Queen

This is a new spellbound episode for the The Jim Rose Circus. This is not what you saw in the episode of the Simpsons where Homer runs away and joins the Jim Rose Circus as the human cannonball. And you didn't see anything this like this on Jims weekly Television Show, The Jim Rose Twisted Tour on the Travel Channel, nor on the X-Files in 1995, the much lauded guest star role as the lead murder suspect in what was to become one of the most popular episodes. Indeed, this is not what you witnessed when Jim Rose was on tour with NIN and opening act Marilyn Manson in 1994 presenting some of the most raunchiest acts for its time. Unlike those, this show's content is a compelling one, the theme is redemption... This is Jake The Snake Roberts living out his tragedy once and for all. Painfully misunderstood and abused within by his torment, torn apart by being loved not hated. He was supposed to be the bad guy against Hulk Hogan in the 80s but he sold his character too well and his charisma continued to woo his fans. When he walked into the arena to cheers Hulk would get boos. The promoters invested so much into marketing Hulk as the good guy that they had to discontinue Jake the Snake while he was selling out Madison Square Garden time after time.

He took it hard and had a rough patch. These tough times were exposed in the documentary "Beyond The Mat," the writer for the movie The Wrestler says that this documentary is what inspired him to write the script.

Now it's time to get ready to be engrossed for the next chapter brought to you live with your ringleader Jim Rose at the helm. Yes it’s a soap opera comedy but that’s what wrestling is. Everyone
familiar with Jake knows this is a show about redemption, And this show is about his hard fought comeback.

Jim Rose will lead and mislead his rapt audience once again on a journey rife with misunderstood, mysterious and idiotic achievements as he plays The Villain. He’ll explore and sometimes expose the
difference between man and monster. The sixty-minute plus performance is infused with Rose’s wicked wit, stunning feats and unexpected asides. He delights the audience with his own tongue-in-
cheek charismatic style. Now be forwarned, this is not his first time showcasing wrestlers. In
1997 - 1998 Jim put together a new show that featured Women Sumo Wrestling, Power Tools, Mexican Transvestite Wrestling, and a retrospect of his classic stunts. This show landed Jim in a Lubbock Texas jail, and banned him in New Zealand for a couple of weeks until the authorities relented.

Despite these set backs, it was one of his best selling shows ever. This new coupling of rock and roll and theatre will dwarf any show he has ever done.

A showman in the classic Barnum style, he’s obsessed with the best and the strangest and with providing genuine entertainment.
- The Toronto Star -

His delivery is brutally comic. He plays the highly-strung audience like a violin.
- The Independent, London -

The line in Salt Lake City stretched all the way to the Mormon Temple. They had to turn hundreds away. - Wall Street Journal -

Fun for all ages!

MOONSPELL released its long-awaited new DVD, "Lusitanian Metal", in December in Europe via Century Media Records. The first disc features one complete live show recorded live in Katowice in 2004, all video clips (from "Opium" to "Everything Invaded"), an in-depth interview with all current band members and a detailed discography. The second disc offers a historical overview of the Portuguese metal group's period as a Century Media recording artist, with no less than 50 live tracks, starting with some very old-school live rehearsal recordings back in 1992 and ending with live footage from the "Spreading The Eclipse Tour".

"Lusitanian Metal" is available as luxurious limited-edition kingsize mediabook with both DVDs as well as a CD with the complete Katowice show as well as a standard 2DVD in a super jewel case. The CD included in the limited edition is also available separately.

The band's latest album, "Night Eternal", entered the national chart in Portugal at No. 3 and in Germany at No. 62. The follow-up to 2006's "Memorial" was recorded at Antfarm studios in Denmark with producer Tue Madsen (THE HAUNTED, DARK TRANQUILLITY, HALFORD).

"Above", the new album from SAMAEL, entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 99.

Audio samples of all 10 tracks that appear on "Above", are available on Amazon.co.uk.

In an interview with Beyond the Dark Horizon, mainman Vorph stated about "Above", "It is like an enhanced version of our three or four first albums, maybe the missing link between 'Ceremony of Opposites' and "Passage". With the 'Era One' project we've tried to work on different influences, [and] with 'Above' we stripped everything down. It is a metal album through and through. . . 'Above' is a little bit of a tribute to our early years as a band and to our first influences. If you listen to our two last albums, you can tell our roots go beyond that but 'Above' is a good résumé of what pushed us to start playing music in the first place."

BRET MICHAELS Suffers Nose Fracture And Busted Lip

According to the Associated Press, POISON singer Bret Michaels fractured his nose and had to get three stitches in his lip after getting clocked in the head by a descending set piece during his band's performance at Sunday's (June 7) Tony Awards ceremony.

Publicist Joann Mignano says Michaels was getting a CAT scan on Monday as a precaution, as he's had a past neck injury.

Although he's "pretty bruised up," Mignano says, Michaels was in good spirits. He wiped off blood with a towel and laughed backstage when host Neil Patrick Harris joked that the singer "gave head banging a whole new meaning."

"He had a great time performing for the Broadway audience," Mignano told the Associated Press.

POISON appeared with the cast of "Rock of Ages", the jukebox musical about an aspiring rock group on the Sunset Strip. The dark-horse show, which originated at Hollywood's King King club before moving to Las Vegas and then Broadway, received five nominations, including one for best musical.

The appearance was the first time that Michaels has appeared with POISON on the red carpet since the infamous fight between him and C.C. DeVille took place at MTV Music Awards.

The Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre, more commonly known as the Tony Awards, recognize achievement in live American theatre and are presented by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League at an annual ceremony in New York City.

THE FIRE AND REASON - PERFORM TELEVISION DEBUT ON LOGO'S NEWNOWNEXT AWARDS‏

The Fire and Reason have been given the honor of not only performing their television debut on The NewNowNext Awards on Logo TV (MTV/VH1 Networks), but are also nominated for THE BRINK OF FAME AWARD (the same award Lady Gaga won last year). As the only unsigned band nominated for this very special award, The Fire and Reason are up against some heavy competition, including the likes of Lykke Li, Morningwood, and Ladyhawke. Premiering June 13th at 9pm, this is one awards show that should not be missed (see below for full schedule).

Forming less then three years ago, The Fire and Reason features Brazil’s Bella Saona and Ecuador’s Steve Narvaez, who joined forces to create some of the dirtiest rock, baille-funk electro-pop dance music blasting out of either side of the bridge. You could describe this Brooklyn-meets-Loisaida duo as a combination of Lower East Side rock chick, 1980's Madonna, South American hipsters and global jet-setters. Their first hint of success came with the popular remix of their song “NME,” by trendy Parisian DJ TOXIC AVENGER. The Fire and Reason make no secret of their multi-cultural appeal. With their syncopated, complex Afro-Cuban electro beats, they are always proud to play to their Latin roots whether they are singing in English, Spanish or Portugese.

To celebrate this fantastic BRINK OF FAME nomination, it is not surprising that Brooklyn’s own musical Svengalis Larry Tee and Alexander Technique would be the catalysts behind releasing The Fire and Reason’s upcoming EP “Do It Again,” featuring the title track, additionally remixed by Larry Tee and Alexander Technique under the moniker "Blogula," as well as Killer on The Dancefloor’s remix of TFaR’s Baile-Funk, “PRESTA ATENCAO.” The EP will be released digitally on June 9th on the DJ’S ARE NOT ROCKSTARS LABEL (DANR).

Be sure to come see The Fire and Reason live

ALICE IN CHAINS SIGN WITH EMI

ALICE IN CHAINS SIGN WITH EMI

LONG-AWAITED NEW ALBUM COMING IN SEPTEMBER

Los Angeles, CA- Legendary rock band ALICE IN CHAINS has signed an exclusive worldwide deal with EMI's Virgin Records and are gearing up for the release of their first new studio album in more than 10 years. The band and producer Nick Raskulinecz (Rush, Foo Fighters) began recording last October at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA and recently finished mixing at Henson Studios in Hollywood. The highly anticipated album is scheduled for release this September.

Guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez reunited in 2005 at a benefit for victims of the tsunami in Indonesia. They began touring with new guitarist/vocalist William DuVall the following year.

"It's been a meaningful journey and a hell of a story," says Cantrell. "We're very excited to have a home at Virgin/EMI and are looking forward to writing new chapters in the book of Alice."

"We're in a good place," adds Kinney. "We've made a record that we're really proud of, we've got a team in place that's passionate about the music and we're excited for the fans to hear the new songs."
"Alice In Chains has had a big hand in the evolution of music and I still can't believe we get to work with them," says Rob Stevenson, President of Virgin Records. "This music is going to remind people what we've all been missing."
"There is a tremendous sense of excitement and dedication within EMI around the world as we head into this album release," Added Jeff Kempler, EMI's COO of New Music for North America and the UK,"Alice In Chains' place in rock history is undeniable and when people hear this remarkable new work it will be clear how timeless, potent and visionary this band is."
Alice In Chains were among the headliners at the recent Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, OH. Next up is a July 18 show with Kid Rock at Comerica Park in Detroit, to be followed by festival shows with Metallica overseas, including an August 1 date at Marlay Park in Dublin and an August 2 show at the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth. Earlier this year, the quartet took a break from recording to perform a string of shows in Australia with Nine Inch Nails.

Over the course of their remarkable career, Alice In Chains has garnered multiple Grammy nominations, sold more than 17 million albums worldwide and achieved 11 top 10 hit singles.

SPINAL TAP To Perform On 'The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien'

England's "loudest heavy metal band" SPINAL TAP will be the featured musical guest on "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" on Monday, June 15. Check local listings for more information.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the cult classic film "This is Spinal Tap", and SPINAL TAP, is celebrating with the release of its first new album in almost two decades, "Back From The Dead" (The Label Industry Records/Artist2Market/INgrooves). Due on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, the follow-up to 1992's "Break Like The Wind" sees TAP members David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls unearth their long-self-suppressed studio versions of the classic songs from the movie "This is Spinal Tap", as well as six new additional tracks and an exclusive hour-long accompanying DVD featuring a track-by-track video commentary by the band. "Back From The Dead" also features guest appearances by Phil Collen (DEF LEPPARD), Keith Emerson, John Mayer and Steve Vai.

"This album title says it all. We're back from the dead. But we weren't dead. But we definitely are back," proclaimed Hubbins.

"Back From The Dead" is a deluxe CD/DVD package aggressively priced and containing 19 original SPINAL TAP songs, a one-hour DVD and unique pop-up diorama package that unveils three 12-inch action figures (courtesy of Sideshow Collectibles) of the band along with a proportionally sized Stonehenge.

"Back From The Dead" is destined to be a collector's item, especially among collectors. The LP includes the newly interpreted TAP classics "Hell Hole", "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight", "Heavy Duty", "Rock 'n' Roll Creation", "America", "Cups and Cakes", "Big Bottom", "Sex Farm", "Stonehenge", "Gimme Some Money" and "(Listen to the) Flower People".

"While the movie and soundtrack accurately represented our stage sound at the time, the studio versions of these songs on this album represent the cosmic maturation of the material, within a digital context. Also, they're louder," stated Smalls.

The new songs recorded specifically for "Back From The Dead" include "Warmer Than Hell", "Short and Sweet", "Celtic Blues", "Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare", "Back From The Dead" and "the first known studio recording of the soon-to-be-long-forgotten 'Jazz Oddyssey'."

"Back From The Dead" was produced by CJ Vanston, who arranged and played keyboards on the band's "Break Like The Wind" album and was musical director for their 1992, 2000 and 2007 tours. As a film composer, he has produced music for Christopher Guest's movies "Waiting For Guffman", "Best In Show", "A Mighty Wind" and "For Your Consideration".

The "Back From The Dead" deluxe CD/DVD package is being distributed completely outside of the traditional major label infrastructure. Retail distribution and marketing of physical CDs will be handled by Artist2Market (A2M) while digital marketing and distribution will be serviced by INgrooves.

Riot Fest Celebrates 5th Anniversary

RIOT FEST CELEBRATES IT’S 5th ANNIVERSARY WITH THE MOST PHENOMENAL LINE-UP YET IN CHICAGO

OCTOBER 7 – 12 TICKETS ON SALE JUNE 8th

SCREECHING WEASEL, NOFX, ALKALINE TRIO, MURDER CITY DEVILS, THE DEAD MILKMEN & COCK SPARRER ANNOUNCED

LOS ANGELES’ INAUGERAL RIOT FEST WEST ANNOUNCED
NOVEMBER 12-14

“Riot Fest firmly established itself in 2006 as one of the best showcases for punk and underground music in the country.” Jim Derogatis, Chicago Sun Times

Five years. What does it all mean? Five years equals 25,336 fans, over 150 bands, 946 stage dives, 4 asshole bouncers, 2632 cases of beer, 172 hours in line, 1 FBI Sting, 23 business suits and too many broken ribs. That, my friends is something.

Started in 2005, the men and women of Riot Fest strive to create a festival they would love to attend, with one eye on the legendary Chicago punk scene and the other on the bands that inspire them, with a special emphasis on reunited influential bands that all fans of punk and underground music grew up with. Five years later, Riot Fest marches on in Chicago, their beloved hometown and announces their new Riot Fest West, three nights in Los Angeles! While 2009’s entire line-up remains shrouded in mystery, a few of the mind-boggling choices for this year’s Chicago Riot Fest have been announced. Brace yourself.

Screeching Weasel, a seminal band from Chicago who took the ethos of the Ramones and added a bitter, witty twist will take the stage. NOFX will arrive from the North Bay with their explosive live show, drunken antics and anti-GOP agenda. Chicago represents with Alkaline Trio, who blossomed from the local scene and forged an international profile, releasing critically acclaimed albums. Seattle’s Murder City Devils are notorious for their drunken depravity while performing and their raw, lurid lyrics, which deal chiefly with rock n’ roll excess (especially drinking), truckers, sailors and women. Philadelphia’s satirical, snotty and irreverent The Dead Milkmen are known for their hit song, “Punk Rock Girl”, which was a favorite of MTV’s “Beavis and Butthead Show” One of the original punk bands, the UK’s Cock Sparrer will return to Chicago for the first time, since, well, no one can remember when.

Riot Fest Chicago will occur October 7-11th at Congress Theatre, Metro, Double Door, Subterranean and Cobra Lounge. A limited number of five day passes go on sale June 6th, for the low, recession-proof price of $99.00 – which will include 14 shows! Five day pass holders will have the opportunity to win tickets to one of 4 secret shows planned beginning in August and running until the Fest kicks off.

Riot Fest West takes its bow on November 12th – it runs through the 14th at four venues, Palladium, The Wiltern, Key Club and The Roxy in Los Angeles, the line-up will be announced shortly.
